Ayatollah khamenei(Iran’s supreme leader):
"TATBIR (self-flagellation with knives or chains) is a fabricated tradition.
Peace be on you, O Abaa Abdullah, and on those souls who came to your camp to put themselves at your disposal. So far I am alive and the days and nights follow each other I invoke Allah to send blessings on you for ever and ever. May Allah not make my this pledge of close association, physical as well as spiritual, with you the last fulfillment. Peace be on Hussein, and on Ali son of Hussein, and on the children of Hussein, and on the friends of Hussein.[Part of ziaarat ashura of Imam Hussein]
Assembly of Shia Women in Karbala, Ashura 2013
Once upon a time, in 61 AH, Imam Hussein, the third Imam of Shia, and his little followers were martyred in a brutally manner.
Hossein (as) is the grandson of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He was invited by about 18000 people of Kufa to establish his caliphate and dethrone the libertine leader, Yazid. But Ebne Ziad the new leader of Kufa (a city in Iraq under supervision of Yazid) scared people in a manner that almost all of them returned from their idea and leaved Hussein alone and even fight with him!

Finally happened what happened:
Hussein and 72 persons of his followers were against the enemy army of about 30,000 warriors. They all were martyr in a very brutally manner. Although they were in a place between two rivers but the enemy were closed the path to rivers and they were thirsty for about 3 days. There were some children over there; specially one infant child, Ali Asghar (as) which killed while he was on hands of his father Hossein (as) asking water for him!
Since then each year Shiites mourn for Hussein and his followers at Muharram and specially Ashura the 10th day of Muharram in which AbaAbdellah Al Hussein (as) martyred. Moreover, millions of pilgrims mourn in Karbala every year, yet it still remains a distant journey that each and every Shia longs to make.

Arbaeen commemorates the end of a 40-day mourning period after the
killing of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, during a
battle in 680 AD.
Millions of Shia pilgrims are gathering in Iraq's holy city of Karbala
to mark Arbaeen, commemorating the end of a 40-day mourning period after
the killing of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, during a
battle in 680 AD. His martyrdom is considered a defining event in the
schism between Sunni and Shia Muslims.
Huge crowds of Shia Muslim pilgrims gather outside the Imam Hussein shrine in the holy city of Karbala
Arbaeen is the world's largest annual gathering, with the number of
pilgrims far exceeding the two million visitors who descend on Mecca for
the Hajj. In 2015, Iraqi state-run media said more than 22 million
pilgrims visited Karbala, setting a record for the annual pilgrimage,
though that figure could not be independently verified.

Shia Muslims have commonly been targeted by by hardline Sunni insurgents(ISIS)
during the Arbaeen period. Iraqi authorities have adopted stringent
security measures for the annual pilgrimage procession. Hundreds of
thousands of Iraqi Shia pilgrims made the 80-kilometre (50 mile) trek on
foot from Baghdad, escorted by armoured vehicles, soldiers and
ambulances. More than a million pilgrims are expected to make the
journey on foot from Iran.

A suicide bomber killed six people near Karbala on Monday 14 November,
at the start of the festival, an attack claimed by the hardline Sunni
militants of Islamic State (Isis/Daesh), who regard Shia Muslims as
apostates. Undeterred by the threat, huge crowds of Shia pilgrims have
flocked to the shrines of Hussein and his half-brother Abbas in Karbala
Arba'een Pilgrimage
The Arba'een Pilgrimage is the world's largest public gathering that is held every year.[1][2] This Ziyarah[3] is held at the end of the 40-day mourning period following Ashura, the religious ritual for the commemoration of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson Hossein ibn Ali's death in 680.[4][5] Arba'een marks a "pivotal event in history"[6] in which the pilgrims make their journey to Karbala on foot,[7] where Husayn ibn Ali, the third Imam of Shia, and his army were killed and beheaded by the army of Yazid I.[1] Some of the pilgrims make their journey from cities as far as Basra, about 500 km away by road.[8]
